Good Replacement For Now, March 26, 2009 By Bill S. "ATxFireman" (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Shimano ST-R500 STI Flight Deck Lever Set (8-Speed, Silver) (Sports) I own a 93 Specialized Allez Epic with Dura Ace components. The bike sat in the garage for a number of years before I got back into cycling. I purchased these to replace my old Dura Ace 7403 shifters. I got tired of purchasing bad used replacements on E-bay. A mechanic at my LBS found these for me.
I ran into a big problem. The mechanic could not get them to shift into the two highest (small) gears on the rear cassette. He thought the old 8 speed derailer might be bad, but the same problem happened when I gave him a spare derailer I had. He got them to work with an entry level Sora 9 speed long cage derailer. I did some internet research and found out that when Shimano introduced 9 speed in 1997 they changed cable travel of the rear derailer so that the whole line of their products was compatible from then on. Wonderful Replacement/Upgrade, January 25, 2009 By This review is from: Shimano ST-R500 STI Flight Deck Lever Set (8-Speed, Silver) (Sports) I purchased the ST-R500 shifters to replace on older style worn out set. Everything necessary for complete installation was included. Directions were adequate, and the actual installation went smoothly. Once the shifters were on the bike and the cable tension adjusted my son took it for a ride. And another ride, and now many more. So far with lots of club riding and a few hundred miles they are still working like day one. If you have an 8 speed road bike in need of new or upgraded shifters, these should do the trick!

Levers, June 17, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Shimano ST-R500 STI Flight Deck Lever Set (8-Speed, Silver) (Sports) I bought these S.T.I. levers for a Raleigh R700 Comp road bike. Installation was a breeze on FSA Omega bars with an OS-190 stem. What I like about these levers is they allow me to shift from the drops, since I am almost always in the drops. The shape of these levers is a huge step up from the old-school, plain, non-S.T.I. brake levers I had before. Climbing is much easier now; the shape of the levers makes it easy to get leverage if you pull on the hoods while ascending. You can also shift while standing on the pedals, something I could never do with non-S.T.I. levers.
The aesthetic and performance quality of these levers is comparable to Tiagra levers. Having 8-speeds means you don't have to shell out cash at a bike shop for narrow chains if you put in a lot of miles -- there's less maintenance, too. Coming from old-school indexed style shifters, these levers make cycling easier, and most of all, safer. I can brake while down-shifting, without taking a hand off the bars,... Read more
